Case of the Month       August, 1999

Case summaries taken from the monthly Orthopedic Oncology - Radiology - Pathology Multidisciplinary Conference at the University of Massachusetts Medical School

Case presentation:

A 52 year old man had a six week history of aching pain  in the shoulder at rest and with activities.  On exam, there was pain and tenderness over the proximal humerus and the anterolateral arm, as well as pain with abduction  and limitation of motion of the shoulder.  Radiographs showed a tumor in the proximal humerus. Plain radiographs and a bone scan are shown at right.

What is the diagnosis of the tumor in the humerus?  Is the tumor causing the pain or is it due to sometihing else?  How can you find out?
